What is a job review?
A job review is not the same thing as a performance or appraisal interview? An appraisal interview assesses your performance while a job review aims to discuss the way that you work. During this meeting, your manager will aim to help you to improve in your position.

Say what you want

A job review is not an interview. So have a think before your review to see how you feel in the company, in the team and in your position. During the review, you can also mention things you would like to discuss or indicate areas in which you feel the need for more support. This meeting is an opportunity for you to evolve within your job. You should not restrict yourself to negative points, you should also mention the areas in which you think everything is going well.

Think of the future

Before the meeting, have a good think about the career objectives you wish to achieve over the next few years. You can then talk about them during the interview and discuss with your manager how to achieve them.

Ask for examples

If your manager mentions areas which need perfecting, ask for specific examples. It is extremely important that you understand what he or she means so that you can attempt to work on it. What if you don’t agree with your manager? Explain why you don’t share their opinion and try to look into the question in more detail?

Be careful

Not everyone can talk about their problems with their manager easily. If you find a subject embarrassing, approach it with a certain caution. Make sure you have enough examples to express your feelings that a specific aspect of work is not going well. Examples are always more effective than vague descriptions.

Leave with a good feeling

Do you have a bad feeling at the end of the review? Talk about it with your manager and try to close the review on a positive note. Put together a personal development plan in order to have a clear idea of the points you have discussed.
