In a nutshell

A Supply Chain Engineer optimizes the production chain. That includes all the business processes that a product undergoes until it arrives at the end user: acquisition of raw materials, production processes, transport from suppliers and to customers, etc.

The task package: optimizing business processes

  • You analyze business processes for risks, lead times, cost price breakdown, volume, customer coverage, etc.
  • You develop measures for improvement and implement them with the internal (production) departments of the company and/or with the suppliers.
  • As a Supply Chain Engineer in a relatively small company, you control several steps of the production chain; in a large company you often focus on a single part, for example purchasing.
  • You are responsible for design and implementation of the supply chain in the introduction of new products.
  • You are the contact point for your colleagues from the production, logistics, purchasing, and sales departments for everything that has to do with technical or operational processes.
  • You negotiate with suppliers, logistics service providers, customers, and other chain partners about the purchase of raw materials, packaging materials, auxiliary materials, transport, etc.
  • In a large company you sometimes report to a Supply Chain Manager.

Profile: technically and analytically strong

These skills are highly useful if you are a Supply Chain Engineer:

  • Technical skills: you have insight into production processes.
  • Analytically strong: you can analyze business processes well and make connections.
  • Skilled in communication: you are good at maintaining relations with customers, suppliers, colleagues, etc.
  • A feeling for sales: you are customer-oriented and have good financial insight.
  • A strong sense of responsibility.

And your payslip?

As a Supply Chain Engineer you can – depending on your experience, the size of the company where you work, and your responsibility for all or a part of the production chain – count on a gross salary between 3000 and 5000 euro.

How to become a Supply Chain Engineer

Supply Chain Engineers usually have training in an economic or technical field such as economic or commercial sciences, commercial engineering, logistics or supply chain management, or engineering sciences. You have preferably also acquired experience in a production environment.
